Course Content

This intermediate-level course is designed for students who have a basic foundation in Hindustani classical music and are ready to dive deeper into the rich world of Raagas and Taals. With guided training and structured practice, learners will begin exploring the mood, structure, and expressions of some of the most beautiful and essential raagas in the classical tradition.

The course includes detailed introductions and practice of Raag Yaman, Bageshri, Rageshree, Bhoop, Puriya Dhanashree, and more. Each raag will be approached with an understanding of its Aroha-Avaroha (ascending and descending notes), Pakad (key phrases), Vadi-Samvadi (primary notes), and emotional essence. Students will practice basic Alaap, Taan, and Bandish in each raag to develop melodic freedom and vocal command.

In addition to raag work, learners will explore the rhythmic foundation of music by being introduced to important taals such as Rupak (7 beats), Jhaptal (10 beats), Teentaal (16 beats), and Ada Chautal (14 beats). The course focuses on how to sing within a taal, identify sam, and improve layakari (rhythmic improvisation). This training strengthens a student’s ability to perform with clarity, expression, and deeper musical understanding.
