This beginner-level Carnatic Music course, guided by Tutor Pradip Somasundaran, is designed to provide a strong foundation for anyone who wishes to understand and appreciate the traditional South Indian classical music system. The course introduces students to the essential elements of Carnatic music, beginning with Swaras (basic musical notes) that form the backbone of every composition. Learners will gradually move on to Varishakal, which help in mastering the correct pitch, rhythm, and voice control through systematic exercises. As the course progresses, students will learn Simple Geethams, which are short and melodious compositions combining both swaras and lyrics, offering the first step into structured singing. The course also covers the concept of Ragas, the melodic frameworks that define the mood and emotion of a composition, and Thalas, the rhythmic cycles that guide tempo and structure. Further, learners will be introduced to Varnams, advanced compositions that enhance understanding of both melody and rhythm, and finally Krithis, devotional compositions that represent the soul of Carnatic music. Under the expert guidance of Pradip Somasundaran, students will engage in practical exercises and guided listening to develop clarity, confidence, and discipline in music. By the end of the program, learners will have a solid grasp of both theoretical and practical aspects of Carnatic music, preparing them for advanced levels of study and performance.
