Level 1: Introduction to Bharatanatyam
Students begin by understanding the history and spiritual significance of Bharatanatyam. Basic postures (aramandi and samapadam), hand gestures (mudras), and foundational adavus (basic steps) are introduced. Rhythm and coordination are emphasized through Tatta Adavu, Natta Adavu, and Visharu Adavu.
Level 2: Strengthening the Basics
This level focuses on improving balance, stamina, and precision in movements. Students learn additional adavus like Tatti Metti Adavu and Teermanam Adavu. The concept of tala (rhythm) is introduced, and practice sessions include simple jatis (rhythmic patterns).
Level 3: Introducing Expressions and Abhinaya
Dancers explore abhinaya (expression) and bhava (emotions) to convey meaning through gestures. Basic hastas (hand gestures) such as Asamyukta and Samyukta Hastas are practiced. Short storytelling sequences are introduced, and students begin learning small dance compositions.
Level 4: Learning Jathis and Karanas
The focus is on perfecting jathis (rhythmic sequences) and introducing karanas (dynamic poses) from the Natya Shastra. Students also learn to combine adavus with expressions, preparing for small performances. Simple shlokas and devotional pieces are introduced to enhance storytelling skills.
Level 5: Mastering Nritta and Abhinaya
This level deepens understanding of nritta (pure dance movements) and abhinaya (expressive storytelling). Students practice alankaras (ornamental movements) and learn their first Padam (expressive dance piece). Understanding of rhythm cycles (talam) is enhanced with more complex jatis.
Level 6: Performing Simple Varnams and Keerthanams
Dancers learn simple varnams, which combine nritta, abhinaya, and natya (drama). They begin exploring Keerthanams (devotional songs) and their significance. Footwork patterns become more intricate, and improvisation is introduced in expressions.
Level 7: Advanced Choreography and Rhythm Mastery
Students work on complex talas (rhythmic cycles) and intricate jathis. They learn longer varnams and begin choreographing small pieces. Their stamina, grace, and control over bhava (expression) and tala (rhythm) are refined through rigorous practice.
Level 8: Stage Performance and Arangetram Preparation
This level focuses on preparing for stage performances and mastering mood, expressions, and transitions in storytelling. Students practice a full-length Varnam, Javali, and Tillana—important pieces of a Bharatanatyam performance. They also receive guidance on costume, makeup, and stage presence.
Level 9: Arangetram – The Grand Performance
This is the final milestone where students present their Arangetram (debut stage performance), showcasing years of rigorous training. A full-length recital includes Alarippu, Jatiswaram, Varnam, Padams, and Tillana. This level marks the dancer’s transition from student to performer, celebrating their dedication to Bharatanatyam.
Each level builds on the previous one, refining skills, discipline, and artistry, ensuring that dancers embody the true essence of Bharatanatyam.
