Course Content

The Alankar level in Bharatanatyam represents the highest stage of learning, focusing on technical mastery, expressive storytelling (Abhinaya), and professional stage performance. This course is designed for advanced students who wish to perfect Nritta (pure dance), Nritya (expressive dance), and Natya (dramatic performance) while deepening their theoretical, spiritual, and cultural understanding of this classical art form.

At this level, students refine all Adavus with speed, control, and grace, practice complex Jatiswarams in multiple Talas, and gain expertise in Karanas (dynamic poses) drawn from the Natya Shastra. Special attention is given to Teermanams and Mukthayams (complex rhythmic endings) and mastering Laya (tempo) with intricate footwork.

In Abhinaya, learners explore the Navarasa (nine emotions) and Ashtanayika (eight heroines) through Padams and Javalis, mastering facial expressions, bhava, and emotional depth with guidance from Abhinaya Darpana. Students also study Sapta Talas (seven rhythmic cycles), performing advanced Jathis and Korvais with precision, while perfecting the Margam sequence: Alarippu, Jatiswaram, Varnam, Padams, Javalis, Tillana, Shloka, and Mangalam.

The course prepares students for Arangetram (debut performance) by incorporating stage aesthetics, choreography, costume, jewelry, and makeup, ensuring professional readiness. Additionally, learners engage in theoretical studies, exploring the Natya Shastra, history, philosophy, and evolution of Bharatanatyam, while also gaining teaching skills and research methodologies.

By completing the Prarambhik – Alankar course, students emerge as refined performers, skilled teachers, and knowledgeable scholars, embodying discipline, grace, devotion, and storytelling, ready to contribute to the legacy of Indian classical dance.
